Updating driver’s license and auto insurance

Updated by Dave Jurgens

Contacting a support agent won’t speed up the review of your insurance upload. To avoid possible delays, make sure your insurance document meets all criteria, including a name that matches your driver’s license and a valid expiration date.

You can update your driver’s license and auto insurance by logging in to your Spark Driver™ account and following the prompts as shown.

Updating driver's license

To update your driver's license, you can:

  1. go to the Spark Driver app Home screen, tap More (iOS) or Menu (Android).
  2. tap Driver’s License.
  3. tap Update.
  4. review the Scan your driver’s license screen, then prepare to scan your driver’s license and tap CONTINUE.
  5. scan the front and back of your driver’s license.

Next Steps:

  • The Spark Driver app will review the scanned driver’s license, then ask you to take a selfie.
  • After your driver’s license and selfies are reviewed, you will be notified if images are accepted or not.
    • If they are accepted, you can tap GOT IT to continue using Spark Now.
    • If they are not, you can follow the in-app prompts to try again.
REAL ID
What is REAL ID-compliant driver's license?
In 2005, the REAL ID Act was established by Congress, mandating that driver's licenses and identification cards from U.S. states and territories meet certain standards for entry into certain Federal locations. Now, Spark Driver requires the same. For more information, the driver can check out the FAQ section on the REAL ID website.
You have a valid driver's license. Is that a REAL ID-compliant driver's license?
Not necessarily. A REAL ID-compliant driver's license is a state-issued driver's license that meets certain security standards set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
How can I check if my driver's license is a REAL ID-compliant driver's license?
A small star in the upper-right corner of the ID indicates it's a REAL ID-compliant driver's license.
How can I obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver's license if I don't have one?
For specific instructions, you can visit your state's Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) or licensing agency website, as requirements and procedures may vary by state.
You can also visit the Department of Homeland Security, locate the REAL ID interactive map, and select a state for detailed instructions.
Do I need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license if my driver's license has not expired?
Although it's preferred, you don't need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license if your driver's license hasn't expired yet. You can upload an image of your driver's license and the front and back of your Social Security card.
How much time do I have to get a REAL ID-compliant driver's license?
The national deadline to get a REAL ID is May 2025. If you don't have one by then, you can upload an image of your driver's license and front and back of your Social Security card. Otherwise, you won't be able to turn on Spark Now to accept offers.
What if I have a REAL ID identification card, but not a REAL ID-compliant driver's license?
A REAL ID identification card is not the same as a REAL ID-compliant driver's license. A REAL ID identification card will not meet platform requirements.
What if I don't upload or obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver's license?
As of March 2025, depending on your zone, you will be prompted to upload an image of your REAL ID-compliant driver's license within the Spark Driver app. You won't need to upload an image until you're prompted within the app.

If an image of your REAL ID-compliant driver's license is not uploaded, you won't be able to turn on Spark Now.

Alternatively, you may also upload an image of the front and back of your Social Security card in place of a REAL ID-compliant driver's license.
Will I be deactivated if I don't have or can't get a REAL ID-compliant driver's license?
No, you won't be deactivated from the Spark Driver app platform for not having a REAL ID-compliant driver's license. Spark Now will be disabled until an image of your REAL ID-compliant driver's license and Social Security card have been uploaded within the app.
How do I get a new copy of my Social Security card?
You can visit the Social Security website for instructions on how to apply for a Social Security card.
